Big thank you to the National Lottery

Derwentside College 11.10.17

This week the National Lottery are celebrating the benefits of their funding to good causes.

We understand loneliness and know that there is no single solution. Our funding from Big Lottery Silver Dreams enables our Come Eat Together project to bring older people together with food. We eat, shop, learn about, talk about and grow food. And whilst we do all that we aim to have a jolly good time and chase away loneliness.

Another Big Thank You goes to our wonderful volunteers and all the Come Eat Together members who help in informal ways to make our activities so enjoyable for all.

Age UK County Durham wants to ensure older people are fully prepared for the winter months ahead. As part of its annual ‘Keep warm, Keep well’ campaign the charity has five top tips to stay warm this winter

1. Keep warm at home (bedrooms 64°F/18°C and living room 70°F/21°C). Use a thermostat or room thermometer.

2. Keep bedroom windows shut at night. Breathing cold air can increase the risk of chest infections.

3. When indoors stay active and try not to sit still for more than an hour. Walk around or make a hot drink.

4. Eat well, especially in winter. Have at least one hot meal a day and have hot drinks to keep warm. Stock up on basics in case of a cold snap.

5. If you need advice about entitlements or benefits contact Age UK County Durham on 0191 386 3856

Enjoy Christmas Lunch in style at East Durham College on 7 December

Christmas can be a lonely time for people who live on their own or older couples whose families are not around at this festive time.

Catering students at East Durham College wanted to make a difference to older people in their area and so they are opening the doors of their college restaurant ‘Scene 1’ on Thursday 7 December at 12.00 noon to host a stylish Christmas Lunch, exclusive for people over 50 who live on their own or will not be enjoying a social Christmas.

This intergenerational activity gives older people in the area the opportunity to mix with young people who are learning important skills. The students enjoy cooking once a month for our Come Eat Together members and enjoy making extra effort to give them a lovely meal.

It’s also the perfect opportunity for those who live alone or need a break from caring to enjoy good food in good company at Christmas time.

Diners will receive a warm welcome and a 2 course Traditional Christmas Fayre, followed by tea or coffee and Christmas games.

For more information about this or other lunch clubs and to book your place please contact Come Eat Together on 0191 374 6577 or e-mail

Don’t fall victim to fraudsters on the phone

The home telephone for some is a lifeline, it is a connection to friends & family. It is also a direct line for fraudsters. Older people are often targeted because they are at home during the day, they may be lonely and can be vulnerable to bullying.

Here are some simple tips to help

If cold callers ring you – DO NOT buy anything, give them your personal details or give them details of your bank account, pension or finances.

Take 5 minutes
Stop before calling any companies back on their correct number. Fraudsters can keep a phone line open for up to 10 seconds and even spoof a dial tone. Please do NOT rush to pick up the phone and call back. Put the kettle on and make a cuppa.

Fraudsters may often know your name and other personal details when they call . They may pretend to be authorities /companies you know such as your bank, broadband supplier, HMRC and even the police.

DO NOT trust the caller ID on your phone as fraudsters use technology and can put up any genuine number.

They cannot tell if you have a virus on your computer – it is a scam
Recently there have been a lot of calls where fraudsters say they are a phone/ broadband company and offer to fix your laptop. Hang up! They are trying to manipulate you into giving them access to your computer and online life.

Do not pay anyone in gift cards – it is a scam
Criminals are calling and asking for payment in gift cards, such as ITunes vouchers. They target everyone including vulnerable people. If you know someone living on their own please let them know.

Please talk about this issue and share it with others.

Call blocking technology is an effective way to stop scam calls getting through.
BT Call Guardian, CPR and TrueCall are three companies who offer call blocking devices and there are call blocker telephones available too. These are a good way of helping to stop telephone fraud and we have heard great feedback on their effectiveness. They are available to purchase through high street retailers and online companies who sell telephones.

If you live in County Durham and would like to know more (or would like to volunteer to help), please contact Age UK County Durham on 0191 386 3856, and ask for our Beat the Scammers project.

First birthday of our Derwentside College Lunch Club

We had a wonderful day celebrating the first birthday of our Derwentside College Come Eat Together lunch club.

Angelo the Restaurant Manager who looks after us told us he loves being the centre of attention among our happy members. We can see what he means!

This lunch club is one of four monthly lunch clubs that take place in FE colleges in County Durham. They all offer a two course meal with good company and after lunch activities to enjoy. Meals are prepared and served by the Catering and Hospitality students providing a wonderful opportunity for young and old to interact.

This intergenerational nature of the session gives older people in the area the opportunity to mix with young people who are learning important skills. Members tell us it is the perfect opportunity for those who live alone or need a break from caring to enjoy good food in good company.

Jean is 65 and has been attending for the past year. She said, “It’s a very pleasant afternoon out of the house with lovely students and staff. The meal is brilliant and I’ll be coming each month as long as I’m fit enough to come”.

New College Durham on 1st Tuesday of the month costs £4.70

Derwentside College on 2nd Wednesday of the month costs £6.00

Bishop Auckland College on last Thursday of the month costs £6.50

East Durham Lunch Club on 2nd Thursday of the month costs £5.95

Here is a short film about our college lunch clubs
