Terry and Jennie’s story

Everyone is delighted our project will continue to make a difference. Terry and Jennie from East Stanley are among them. They feature on the Big Lottery Fund’s coverage of the Silver Dreams Flagship funding. This is their story.

Jennie and Terry Sheppard dropped into Age UK County Durham’s centre in Stanley on a whim at the end of last summer and have never looked back. Living just a stone’s throw from the centre, they were interested to see what went on inside and unlike the infamous, fated cat; their curiosity led them into a gastronomic adventure when they learnt about Come Eat Together.

Jennie was keen for them to get involved with Come Eat Together’s Healthy Eating for Older People course as soon as she heard about it, although she did have an ulterior motive.

A self-proclaimed ‘discerning eater’, until recently Terry (70) was a keen horticulturalist. Sadly, arthritis had impacted on his ability to tend his two allotments and he had to give them up, so Jennie (67) thought it would be a good idea for him to learn to cook and use shop-bought produce to their best advantage in healthy, tasty meals.

They both enjoyed the course so much and felt that they got so much from it that they wanted to go a stage further and embarked enthusiastically on another course to learn about Mediterranean style cookery, which has now become part of their life-style. (Click here to find out more about the Mediterranean Cooking Club).

Still waiting for spaces to come up in the Come Eat Together dining circle at Stanley which is so popular it is subscribed to the max, Terry and Jennie now regularly enjoy a healthy taste of Italy, Spain, Portugal or Greece in the comfort of their own home at a fraction of a restaurant’s price tag.

Jennie said: “For Terry and me, the Age UK cooking sessions have been a great eye opener – especially for Terry. We also have met new friends and are doing more because of the courses. The recipes provided by the course are great and the tutors were lovely as well. Here’s to more.”

Terry and Jennie’s story was kindly compiled by the Big Lottery Fund team. The full article about Come Eat Together can be found here.
